We write the year 1938

In this year it seemed to be taken the first step to “Great Germania”; the events followed hot on each other’s heels, but it was not comparable with the following year.

The first blow of the impatient dictator, Adolf Hitler, was directed against Austria. On 12 February he forced the Austrian chancellor, Kurt von Schuschnigg, to give the (Austrian) Nazis a share in the government in Vienna. According to his own concept of seizure of power in Germany he demanded the taking over of the ministry of the interior by the (Austrian) Nazis and so the disposal of the police. Schuschnigg tried to resist this blackmail only by seeking refuge in attack. He fixed a public opinion poll on Hitler’s demands onto the 12 March. The manipulations, by which this rescue action should be influenced, were a pretext for Hitler to threaten to intervene militarily in case Schuschnigg should not hand over his post to the National Socialist Seyß-Inquart. Also the relenting of the Austrian president, who had rejected the appointment of Seyß-Inquart up to now, in the last minute (in the night between 11 and 12 March), could not stop Hitler’s step. Now another reason for Hitler’s action supplied a telegram with an alleged request for help addressed to Germany. But this request for help was arranged by Göring. On 12 March, early in the morning, marched German troops into Austria. All over they met with a friendly reception, the people of Austria shouted for joy, Austria was a part of Germany again.
